A rare and beautiful hand-coloured antique steel engraving of a raree show (a Georgian-era term for a street puppet show or peep show). The full image is shown in the first photo.
The engraving is from the publication "China, In a Series of Views, Displaying The Scenery, Architecture, & Social Habits, of That Ancient Empire". Published in 1842 by Fisher & Son Co., London. Drawn from original and authentic sketches by the English architect and artist, Thomas Allom, ESQ. who travelled extensively in China, and captured daily life in the Ancient Empire in his series of engravings.
You may well discover something new each time you look at this stunning engraving, as there is so much fine, subtle detail.
