Why Does My Antique Print or Map Look Brand New?
Share
Over the past 15 years in the business, we’ve occasionally had customers question the age of our vintage and antique maps and prints, even though we provide certifications to verify their authenticity.
We completely understand these concerns — after all, antique items can sometimes look surprisingly "new," and that can naturally raise questions. It doesn’t help that some online sellers mislead buyers by marketing modern reproductions as original antiques, making it tricky for customers to know whom to trust.
That’s why we want to share some insights that might explain why authentic antique maps and prints can appear so well-preserved.
So: why do some antiques look "new"?
- High-quality materials: Many vintage maps and prints were created with exceptional materials, like linen or cotton-based paper, rather than the wood pulp paper we’re familiar with today. These high-quality papers are more durable and resist yellowing and deterioration, allowing them to retain their original beauty for centuries.
- Careful storage: If a piece was stored in a safe environment—away from sunlight, moisture, or pollution—it would naturally look better than one exposed to the elements. Some items may even have been framed or preserved under glass, further protecting them over the years.
- Restoration efforts: Thoughtful restoration can also breathe new life into an antique without altering its authenticity, ensuring it remains vibrant and intact.
Of course, not all pieces look flawless. Many of our items clearly "show their age" (for example, foxing, tears, and stains on the paper), but many also look like they might have been printed yesterday. But a well-preserved or restored item is just as authentic as one that’s weathered over time.
But....
... there's one more important factor to take into account when considering the authenticity of a product: the reputation of the vendor. Can you trust that the vendor is telling the truth about the age and authenticity of a product?
Over-the-counter transactions at a brick and mortar store offer you the chance to evaluate, face-to-face, whether a seller is trustworthy. Admittedly, that's not available in an online setting. But there are a few things you can keep in mind when buying antiques online.
-
Experience matters: A vendor with many years in the trade is more likely to be knowledgeable and reliable.
- Customer ratings: Positive and consistent reviews often signal trustworthy service and quality products.
- Responsive communication: Sellers who are open, transparent, and quick to answer questions or address concerns are usually more dependable.
- Proof of authenticity: Vendors who can provide documentation or certifications to verify the age of their items are worth considering.
To recap: an antique print or map may look new because it was made with durable materials, stored well, or thoughtfully restored. These qualities don’t make it any less authentic—in fact, they’re a testament to the print’s journey and the care taken to keep it alive through time. If still in doubt, though, don’t hesitate to reach out to us to share your concerns. Open communication is the best way to get clarity and confidence in your purchase.
At the end of the day, a well-preserved antique tells a story of its history and care. We’re always happy to provide further details or discuss any questions you have about our collection. After all, your trust is as important to us as the history of the pieces we sell.
